The first thing I did to the card was, in order: This lead me to an eBay posting for an Adaptec ASR-71605 which has 4 SFF-8643 ports which can each support 4 SATA hard-drives (for a total of 16 hard-drives on one card) and was available for £42. So, I sought to obtain an HBA that would allow me to abandon the motherboard's SATA ports entirely, and obsolete the SI元124 at the same time, allowing me to connect all 10 internal 3.5" hard-drives to it. The drives themselves check out okay (a SMART extended offline surface test passed on all 6 with no issues), swapping drives on those ports doesn't help, and changing cables doesn't help, leading me to believe it's this issue. However, the Z97-K has a SATA chipset with a known degradation problem ( ) and my board has been throwing SATA link errors and command failures on two specific ports for weeks now. This provides for a total of 14 3.5" hard-drives. An external 4-drive 3.5" hard-drive tower is connected to one of these eSATA ports.

I moved it to the PCIe 2.0 x16 (wired for x8) port and it appears to work fine it no longer hangs for ~10 seconds when the kernel driver probes for it, and an mdraid resync is proceeding at ~ 110 MB/s. It turns out that this card just doesn't like being in the PCIe 3.0 x16 port usually reserved for the GPU on this motherboard.

Alternatively, could install CentOS under VirtualBox on Windows, but that would be evil.EDIT: This situation is resolved. Avoids the hassles of dual booting and lets you run both OSs simultaneously. I'd back up and blow away Windows, install CentOS-5 with software RAID, then install Windows via virtualization - VMware Server or VirtualBox are free (as in beer), and seem easier to deal with than Xen. May not be what you're looking for, but I doubt that controller is true RAID anyway - unless someone else knows better. After an install I could see adding the driver.

If that's part of the solution I don't know how to implement it as this is the initial install. I see what you mean about maybe needing a RHEL driver for RAID device. Of that 1 TB Raid device I set up a 60 GB partition for Windows. I meant to say I have two 1 TB (not 1 GB) drives set up in a Raid 1 device. Reluctant to proceed further, I bailed on the install and am asking for advice on how to proceed.ġ) How can I install CentOS 5.2 on the RAID drive to coexist with a Windows XP installation? My desire is to boot either from this drive.Ģ) Why does the CentOS partitioning software used for the install not display the logical RAID drive set up through BIOS (I'm assuming that this means it was set up apart from any Windows drivers etc.)? Only the two physical drives are displayed and there is no mention of any partitions in use. I expected to see only the one logical RAID device and 60 GB of it in use for a NTFS partition. The installation process shows the two 1GB drives as separate drives and there is no acknowledgment of the 60 GB partition I've already created on them for Windows XP. I'm baffled on where to install the OS software on the RAID device. I've downloaded the CentOS 5.2 images and am able to start the installation process. I boot XP fine from this setup and things run good. The card has a BIOS and I've set up two 60 GB mirrors for Windows. The HBA I'm using is a SYBA SATA II card that uses Silicon Image's SI元124-2 chip. Windows XP is currently installed on a RAID 1 device consisting of a pair of 1 GB WD drives.
